Research Grants and Proposal Development

Funded Research

Arête Glacier Initiative — Resilience and Risk Management of Impacts of Sea Level Rise on Essential Services and Community Function
$100,000 · Funded · Submitted March 2026
Project team: David Johnson (PI), Kelsea Best (co-PI), Utkuhan Genc, and Alyssa Pletcher.
Role: Research concept developer and lead proposal writer; developed the research concept and led preparation of the proposal.

Additional Proposal Development

The following proposals were not funded. Roles distinguish direct proposal writing from research conceptualization.

  • NASEM Gulf Research Program, Evidence to Action (2026) — Infrastructure Planning Informed by the Social Impacts of Disruptions to Critical and Essential Services. $200,000 requested. Research conceptualization: developed ideas and a methodological framework that informed the proposal. PI: David Johnson; named key personnel included Utkuhan Genc.
  • Department of Homeland Security (2024) — County-Level Isolation Risk from Terrorism: A Risk-Driven Platform for Visualizing Impacts. $500,000 requested. Contributing proposal writer: developed technical risk-assessment and modeling components. PI: Allison Reilly.
  • NSF RAISE: CHIRRP (2024) — Adaptive Policy Pathways to Equitably Manage Hydrologic Threats to Coastal Infrastructure Serviceability. $1,000,000 requested. Contributing proposal writer: developed research context and content on sea-level-rise impacts on infrastructure. PI: David Johnson.
  • National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) (2024) — Impacts of Climate Change and Extreme Weather on the Mobility of Socially Vulnerable Populations. $496,530 requested. Research conceptualization: contributed original ideas and methodological framing. PI: Kelsea Best.
  • NSF Smart and Connected Communities (S&CC) — SCC-IRG Track 2: IMPACT: Infrastructure Maintenance Planning with Adaptive Community-Centered Technologies. $1,500,000 requested. Contributing proposal writer: co-developed the socio-technical framework and equity-focused evaluation measures. PI: Mohammad Jahanshahi.
